One of the major sides of tourism in Baku, Azerbaijan is now mobility, or the ability to travel or move around freely.

Some travelers prefer guided (static) tours.

On the flipside, many others, especially the younger generation, want more freedom.

Indeed, they seem to be more right.

Why is it a bad idea not to be flexible and explore the city to the fullest?

So if you're also planning to visit Baku and just seek a pretext to enjoy the city's attractions by hopping on and off a double-decker bus, learning all its details like:

First of all, it's worth mentioning that the Baku City Tour bus is a classic London-style red sightseeing bus, similar to city tour buses in other big tourist spots on Earth.

Just like in London, Rome or Paris.

For example, the bus I hopped on recently was a red double-decker Mercedes-Benz.

Unluckily, it was not open-top (maybe it was convertible).

When I got more information, I learned that there are also open-top buses, but it depends on the weather (it was a rainy day when I was on the bus) and luck.

As for the interior, there’re cushioned (but not soft) seats on the lower deck.

On the upper deck, however, the seats are made of hard plastic but offer a beautiful panoramic view of the city of Baku.

And every seat is equipped with an eight-language audio guide, giving extensive information about the city's history and landmarks.

The audio guide is available in English, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Farsi (Persian) and Azerbaijani.

You can get headphones while purchasing your ticket.

They’re included in the total cost.

Long story short, the Baku Hop On Hop Off bus provides everything that other sightseeing buses around the world do (but it’s better not to expect too much from it).

Hop On Hop Off Baku Routes: Azadliq Sq. to the Museum Center

Baku City Tour itinerary by bus starts from Azadliq Square and goes back to square one (The Museum Center).

As a matter of fact, 750 meters further along Baku Boulevard towards the Crescent Tower is also the Baku Sea Terminal, where the Caspian Cruise Ship departs.

It would be another tour option to try for sea lovers.

Anyways, back to the bus tour, the trip takes approximately 1.5 hours and covers more than 25 km (15.5 miles) in total.

You can hop on the bus from 11:20 to 16:40 every day near Park Bulvar Shopping Mall.

Just under the nose of the pedestrian underpass (where the bus is due out), you can see a red digital standee where you can also learn about the entire route and stops of the Baku City Tour, along with its map.

Nonetheless, to briefly overview the tour, I can say it usually runs in several rotations through Baku's most popular avenues and streets.

Like Neftchilar Avenue, Yusif Safarov Street, Azneft Square, etc.

Baku City Tour Bus Stops: Notable Landmarks to Hop Off

As you can see from the city tour bus map above, there are 15 bus stops where you can get on or off the bus.

To be precise, these bus stops are very close to the main attractions in the city, and all of them should be on your list of top things to do in Baku.

Briefly mentioning the top 3 among the 15, they’re as follows:

#1. Maiden Tower Stop

The Maiden's Tower, once the symbol of Baku, is located in the old town.

You can hit a couple of birds with one stone by visiting here because the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its winding streets, ancient mosques, and castles, is an attraction in itself.

#2. Highland Park Stop

Once an old cemetery, Highland Park Baku is also another spot to get off the bus. 

You can enjoy panoramic views of the Caspian Sea and the city from there (especially at sunset the view is picturesque).

It's like the Maiden's Tower as well. Attraction within attraction. Take a look for yourself!

#3. Flag Square Stop

3rd, Flag Square, where the national flag of Azerbaijan is displayed, is a great station to get off. 

It's located at the zero point of the Caspian Sea and has a tall flagpole carrying the largest three-colored flag of Azerbaijan.

Why it's worth hopping off here is because it's also the start of Baku Boulevard.

This means you can visit all the attractions along Baku Boulevard, like the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, Baku Ferris Wheel (Baku Eye), and more.

In short, all stations have more attractions than their names show. 

So, if you want to see one of them, you can just hop off and hop back on along the route.

Baku City Tour Details: Ticket Prices & Departure Intervals

The interval between the buses is more or less 80 minutes, so you'll have enough time to explore the must-see places in the vicinity of the tour stations. 

By the way, the bus stops for approximately 3 minutes at each station.

As for the Baku hop-on hop-off bus prices, it's like this:

For foreign tourists above 12: 

• 30 AZN (17.65 USD),

For foreign tourists between 4-11: 

• 15 AZN (approx. 9 USD)

Kids under 4 don’t need to pay a dime.

Ticket prices are between 5-2 AZN if you are a local.

As a final sidenote, you can only buy a ticket for the city bus tour onsite before hopping on. 

And the tickets are valid for 24 hours after purchase.
